Voting is Powerful

I am not going to bore you with all the details on who is the best candidate to vote for. I will stress that tomorrow is a time to be heard. This is when we can make a difference. The people that are complaining, are the people not voting.  Voting is powerful! Please take a minute and go to your district and vote.

Recycled Pets

When I was in radio I always had a connection to the local animal shelter. We would have the shelter bring a new dog or cat in to be the “pet of the week”. I started volunteering a few days a week and immediately felt the benefits of giving back. When I lost my radio gig.  I remained  in contact with another volunteer who helped me get a part time job at the shelter. This job has been so rewarding for me, it has helped me get back into the work force plus provide for my family. The economy hasn’t just misplaced workers, it has also misplaced animals. People have lost their jobs, they have lost their homes and their income has been lowered or even erased. Which in part has left their animals hungry and abandoned.

In 2008 , Florida, like the rest of the country, was hit really hard due to the economy. We were consistently in the Top 3 for the nation’s foreclosed homes. As a volunteer I saw dogs and cats coming into the shelter that had been locked up in abandoned homes for weeks. There seem to be a flux of strays running loose. People were coming in crying leaving their animals with us because they were living in their car. It was really sad a couple of years ago. Now a days, it’s not that extreme but it still seems that there is a huge amount of strays running wild. The shelter is full capacity all the time.

The reason why I am sharing this story with you is, if you are thinking of adding a new family member to your home why not try the shelters or rescues. The low budget pet stores buy from puppy mills.

They might be cute sweet puppies but their mom is a breeding machine that lives in a cage and barely gets food or water. Please don’t buy from low budget pet stores. If there is no more demand for the puppies then maybe the puppy mills might go out of business.

Instead look for your sweet adorable animal at the local shelters. There are tons of puppies, kittens, big and small dogs, they have it all. At night when I leave for the day. I have a routine I walk down the aisles and say goodnight to all the dogs. Some jump up to greet me with what appears to be smile on their face, some seem like they are performing tricks  and others just look at me with sorrow in their eyes. Animals at the shelter might be recycled but they still have lots of love.

Juicing a New You

I started my juicing craze about 5 months ago. Since we are trying to get pregnant, I thought this might help. I started juicing every morning. Before this I would drink fresh juice once a month. I even got my husband enjoying it. He looks forward to his green -reddish breakfast. I start with one garlic clove, small piece of organic ginger, small piece of beet(not too much it will make you sick), 2-3 sticks of celery, red cabbage, Kale, spinach, carrots, and apple. I put in a little cayenne and kelp powder. This might sound gross but the apple makes it a little sweet. The juice fills me up in the early morning. First, find a juicer that isn’t too tough to manage. Second, find your perfect veggie combination that works perfect for you. Juicing is amazing!!

Garlic-Natural antibiotic, helps with flu and common cold and more

Ginger– Anti-inflammatory, helps with common colds, soothing the digestive system and more

Beet– High levels of anti carcinogens, folic acid, antioxidant that helps the body against heart disease, high levels of Vit A and more.

Celery– Vit A, B1, B2 B6, C, folic acid, iron,calcium and magnesium and more.

Red Cabbage– Cabbage is a muscle builder, blood cleanser and eye strengthener.

Kale- High in folic acid, it contains seven times the beta-carotene of broccoli, carotenoid keep UV rays from damaging the eyes causing cataracts. B6

Spinach– Vit K, Spinach is loaded with flavonoid that functions as antioxidant and anti-cancer agent.

Happy 10/10/10

Some people don’t really believe in the climate crisis and some do. The fact of the matter is there is not an endless supply of resources on the planet. You know the old saying, “all good things must come to an end”. We are taking and taking more than mother earth can keep up with.  Its as though we are raping the planet of it’s goods. The Climate Crisis Project is a good thing with a larger emphasis. It’s about coming together globally and working towards a better way of living while saving the planet. Check out this great website that’s about the climate crisis project. How can you get involved? What can you do to change? No worries if you didn’t start today on the 10th, just start tomorrow. I am looking into a community garden with some friends.

Castor Oil – The Amazing Healer

Edgar Cayce, a medical intuitive known as the “sleeping prophet”, introduced castor oil packs for the treatment of many conditions. In many of his writings, Cayce professed that castor oil can be used to treat a variety of health conditions such as arthritis, liver, intestinal disorders, tumors, cysts and skin conditions.

Research has shown that castor oil has a unique chemical profile rich in ricinoleic acid which is known to exist in nature only in castor oil. Research also shows that castor oil has an increase in lymphocyte production and the level of activity of T-cell lymphocyte.  T-cells lymphocyte is from bone marrow and the thymus gland, it can identify and kill invaders such as virus, bacteria and fungi.

Castor Oil can be picked up at almost any grocery store or natural health food  stores. The oil packs are easy to use and make. Cayce recommends serveral layers of white wool flannel (hold heat better), but cotton flannel will work.

Warm the castor oil to skin temp in a non metallic pot. Soak the flannel in the oil. Should be just enough to soak but not make it dripping. Cover the flannel with plastic food wrap. This will make sure that no oil gets on your heating pad. Lay down and place the pack over the area of concern with a  heating pad on top. Place a heavy towel on top of the heating pad. This will keep constant warmth throughout the treatment. The treatment should last for about 30 min to 1 hour. Cayce’s advice is to meditate during the treatment. This is about mind, body and spirit connection. Healing the body needs connection to the mind and spirit. It makes sense.

For a non-cute condition it’s ok to do the treatment three times a week. Every other night for three weeks with the fourth week off. For acute situation, use for 30 mins a night for five nights, take two nights off, then repeat the cycle for two weeks or until the conditional is resolved. In either case talk with your health care provider.

*Don’t use if pregnant, during heavy times of bleeding and intestinal conditions.

8 Easy Steps to Plow Pose

In honor of the last day of September, which is National Yoga Month; I thought it would be appropriate to end this month with a yoga pose. Plow pose is amazing. I like this pose for a few reasons. First of all, it feels good on my shoulders. Second, my yoga teacher says plow is excellent for stabilizing & balancing your metabolism, great for the immunity. Also, it is good for your thyroid and the throat chakra. Thanks Francesca!

1. Lay on your back.

2. Kick your legs over your head.

3. If you can’t touch the floor behind you, rest your hands on your bum.

4. If you are more flexible you can touch your toes to the floor, your feet will be over your head behind you. Put your hand down on the floor.

5. Keep your head straight.

6. If you want an additional stretch, bend your knees to your head and squeeze your temples with your knees.

7. When your ready to come down press your hands towards the ground. Slowly roll yourself back down towards the floor.

8. Folding your knees into yourself and holding them for a couple of minutes. has some wonderful meanings for the chakras.

Throat Chakra

Chakra five is in the V of your collarbone and is associated with the neck, throat, jaw and mouth. A deficient throat chakra will manifest through neck stiffness, shoulder tension, under-active thyroid and a resistance to communication, whereas inability to listen, excessive talking and an overactive thyroid are related to an excessive third chakra, Herring says. Yoga poses that work to balance the throat chakra include camel pose, bridge pose, shoulder stand and plow pose.

Judging Others is Judging Yourself

A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.

Last week, I focused on not judging others.  It’s not that I am a judgmental person only that I was put into circumstances that allowed my mind to be filled with judgement.  I realized at the end of the week I was judging myself for having judging thoughts.

I found this quote from Gandhi.  I really like it.  If I keep positive thoughts in my mind about everyone and everything that I do, there won’t be any space left to be filled with judgment.
