8 Easy Steps to Plow Pose

In honor of the last day of September, which is National Yoga Month; I thought it would be appropriate to end this month with a yoga pose. Plow pose is amazing. I like this pose for a few reasons. First of all, it feels good on my shoulders. Second, my yoga teacher says plow is excellent for stabilizing & balancing your metabolism, great for the immunity. Also, it is good for your thyroid and the throat chakra. Thanks Francesca!

1. Lay on your back.

2. Kick your legs over your head.

3. If you can’t touch the floor behind you, rest your hands on your bum.

4. If you are more flexible you can touch your toes to the floor, your feet will be over your head behind you. Put your hand down on the floor.

5. Keep your head straight.

6. If you want an additional stretch, bend your knees to your head and squeeze your temples with your knees.

7. When your ready to come down press your hands towards the ground. Slowly roll yourself back down towards the floor.

8. Folding your knees into yourself and holding them for a couple of minutes. has some wonderful meanings for the chakras.

Throat Chakra

Chakra five is in the V of your collarbone and is associated with the neck, throat, jaw and mouth. A deficient throat chakra will manifest through neck stiffness, shoulder tension, under-active thyroid and a resistance to communication, whereas inability to listen, excessive talking and an overactive thyroid are related to an excessive third chakra, Herring says. Yoga poses that work to balance the throat chakra include camel pose, bridge pose, shoulder stand and plow pose.

Free Yoga

Fall is always one of my favorite seasons. The weather starts to cool down, more soups for dinner, the changing of the leaves; really September is the kick off to fall. There is one more reason to love September besides fall, and that is because September is National Yoga Month. This month there are so many wonderful studios around the country that are opening their doors for a free session. If you have always wanted to try yoga this is your perfect chance. If you go to the National Yoga site and don’t find a studio near you, don’t give up. Most studios are really great about opening their doors to new student for a free drop in session anytime of the year.

I really believe in the benefits of yoga but also think that every time I get on my mat I learn a little bit more about my true self. Yesterday, I went to my yoga class that is outside under an old Oak tree and next to a lake. One of the poses that was a little tough for me to do was supported pigeon pose (salamba kapotasana).

This position looks easy but I struggled with it a bit. It really concentrates on the hips. Which in our daily lives we move forward with our hips.  My teacher informed us that it would be easier the more we practiced but also asked us to think “what is holding you back from moving forward in your life?” After yoga, I realized my fear of change can hold me back.  Wow, I love when my mind speaks to my body.

Are You A Tree?

Our lives can derail at any minute without us expecting it. The smallest thing can throw us off our tracks and into the woods. What am I talking about? Balance. In life there has to be balance of work, play, home, social and “me” time. Sometimes we give more to one area  while the others are neglected. Everyday, I try to keep my choo choo train on the tracks by being a tree. Now, I sound wacko but wait give me a minute. Standing like a tree can make one feel balanced. In yoga the tree pose (pictured below) has such a great meaning and it feels good when your in it.

Meaning: In Tree Pose, your body may sway, like a tree does in the wind, but your foot stays rooted into the ground. This freedom for your body to move and find its balance while you envision being rooted in the ground develops your spiritual acceptance of your body’s position in space.

It’s makes me feel one with myself and keeps me from derailing. I also think it’s my way of trying to balance on one foot for a minute. I love a challenge.

Staying Young with Yoga

This morning I went to a yoga class that was held outside by a huge tree and a small lake.  It was amazing!!  Although, I realized I am not very flexible in certain areas.  Yoga is way of staying young, reducing stress and improving the body image.   The yoga instructor today said something very powerful,  “it’s cheaper to put time and energy into your body now versus waiting until later and the problems are more expensive.” True!  If your not familiar with Yoga here are a couple of moves to show you.
